Is Microblading Suitable for All Skin Types?

Considering a microblading treatment but worried if it will work with your skin type? You are not alone. At our studio, this is one of the most common questions we come across. And our answer is always the same.

“Microblading is suitable for most skin types, except oily skin and certain skin conditions like keloids, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, or hyperpigmentation.”

But let’s back up a bit to understand why certain skin types are considered more ideal than others.

Microblading Debriefed

Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup procedure that is commonly referred to as an eyebrow tattoo.

However, unlike traditional permanent tattoos, microblading uses a special tool that looks like a blade but is more like a pen. It has a series of single needles soldered together or tightly bound linearly.

These extra-fine needles inject pigment into only the upper layers of your brow skin and make it easy for an experienced artist to mimic the look of natural hair strokes that, when done correctly, typically last for 1-3 years.

Microblading for Different Skin Types

In recent years, microblading has become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments for long-lasting brows, with many celebrities endorsing microblading as a game-changer to achieving perfect, natural-looking brows for both women and men.

But what impact can skin types have on the result? Let’s find out.

Types of Skin

The four major skin types are normal, dry, oily, and combination.

The type of skin you have can impact many things, like how long your skin takes to heal, how long the pigment will last, and how dark the pigment will look post-procedure.

Ideal Skin Type for Microblading

The ideal skin type for microblading is normal or dry skin.

Normal skin has balanced moisture levels and isn’t prone to breakouts, making it the most ideal skin type with results lasting well over 2 years.

Dry skin also works, but requires moisturization during the healing process to prevent the skin from getting flaky. However, once healed, results on dry skin are usually sharper than even normal skin, with pigment easily lasting 2+ years.

Not-so-ideal Skin Types for Microblading

Oily skin can cause pigment to fade a lot more quickly, resulting in frequent touch-ups and a lot more care. Hence, artists will often recommend those with oily skin to consider a powder brow treatment rather than microblading.

Those with combination or sensitive skin should also be more considerate when opting for a microblading procedure. Having combination skin can make the procedure trickier as the artist will need to combat both oily and dry zones. Choosing the right artist and following their customized aftercare routine can be critical to getting desired results.

Sensitive skin can cause a lot more discomfort during the healing process, but many clients say that it is more than manageable with the right aftercare and necessary precautions. Again, the right artist and individualized care can make a big difference both during the healing stage and for long-term results.

Skin Conditions Not Suitable for Microblading

While microblading could potentially work for all skin types, certain skin conditions are considered too risky for microblading.

These skin conditions include:

  • Active rashes or infections around the eyebrows
  • Skin disorders like eczema, hyperpigmentation, keloids, psoriasis, or dermatitis
  • Pigment allergies
  • Sunburnt skin

An artist would also not recommend microblading if you have recently undergone treatment around your brow area.

Other Factors to Consider

While your skin type can certainly determine how effective or long-lasting microblading can be for you, it is not the only factor to consider. Results can be impacted by other factors as well, such as:

Artist Expertise and Skill Level

Choosing the right artist can make all the difference when it comes to results. An experienced, licensed, and talented artist can make microblading work for just about any skin type by using advanced techniques and customized aftercare.

Just like you would want the best and most qualified doctor to treat an illness, you want the best permanent makeup artist to do your eyebrows. Choosing an artist who is inexperienced because they are cheap can result in unnatural or uneven-looking brows or brows that don’t have the shape or color you were looking for.

Microblading Aftercare

Aftercare can make or break your microblading procedure. Following the aftercare regimen prescribed by your artist is essential for optimal healing and long-lasting results. Failure to abide by aftercare rules, such as avoiding sunlight, water, and facial treatments, can result in longer healing times and patchy or uneven pigmentation.

An experienced artist will prepare you for what to expect after the procedure and give you a strict aftercare regimen to follow to get the desired results.

Quality of Pigment & Equipment

The type and quality of pigment used can also determine results. Expensive synthetic microblading pigment lasts longer and looks sharper compared to cheaper pigment options.

Using the right type of tool is also vital for the best results. Always ask about the type of pigment and tool an artist or studio is using for microblading. This can help you narrow down your options.

Medical Conditions

Microblading isn’t recommended for certain skin conditions, but it is also not recommended for individuals with medical conditions like autoimmune disease, as it can impact pigment retention and healing. Microblading should also be avoided if you use blood thinners or are undergoing chemotherapy.

Age & Lifestyle

Wrinkly or aged skin is less elastic, which limits the skin’s ability to hold pigment, making microblading less effective for mature men and women.

Lifestyle also plays its part. Smoking and drinking can affect healing, while existing tattoos around the brow area can also cause complications with the microblading process.
